The drug is a prescription drug and should only be taken under the supervision of a healthcare professional, the company said.
FDA spokeswoman Lyndsay Meyer said, "The FDA is advising people not to purchase or use Viagra for recreational purposes."

The warning was based on a study of Viagra-type drugs, which were also taken by patients taking sildenafil, a generic version of Viagra.
The drug's manufacturer, Pfizer, said in a statement, "We strongly advise people not to use Viagra or any other similar erectile dysfunction product to avoid serious health risks associated with taking Viagra."
The FDA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
